Trikorfo, Messenia

A mid-mountain village of the Municipality of Messini, Trikorfo was built at an altitude of 400 metres and is located 32 km away from the city of Kalamata. It is where 40% of the table olives grown in the Prefecture of Messenia are produced, in a land famous for the excellent quality of its olive crops. In addition to olive and olive oil production, the local inhabitants also grow figs.

An Olive Festival is held every year in August at the Trikorfo village square.
The village is also referred to as Pentia in a Venetian census taken in 1690; the name was retained up to 1927 and it originates from the first five families of the village.

Trikorfo includes the settlements of Mavros Loggos and Chilia Spitia, which are no longer inhabited.

History

“Messena is good to plough and good to plant,” wrote the ancient Greek poet, Tyrtaeus, of Messini; in other words, perfect for cultivating and growing crops. Olive oil has always been a valuable product of the Messenian land; in fact, the oil storage jars at the palace of legendary King Nestor were kept next to the throne room. Olives have been grown here for 5,000 years. Laden with symbols and suffering and closely identified with this place, they have always been synonymous with strength and longevity. As the guardian of human memory, the olive worked and continues to work its own special magic.

Peak 2

Tradition

Built amongst three mountain peaks, with a view of the Messenian Plain and the most fertile olive groves in Greece, is the village of Trikorfo. Every August, the olive enjoys its own celebration here: two days of singing and dancing in its honour. From Kiosi to Mavros Loggos and from Sialorema to Chilia Spitia, tireless Grandpa Michalis lived close to his trees. Their fruit were his support. Their oil – the reward for his hard work. His grandchildren now follow in his footsteps.

Peak 3

Quality

Trikorfo is famous for the outstanding quality of its olives, which grow on trees of the fine Koroneiki variety. Half of the table olives in the entire region are grown in this very place. The olives are harvested in the traditional manner. But olive oil production, processing and packaging rely on the most modern means. This combination guarantees the quality of the extra virgin olive oil with the magnificent aroma and deep green colour. It is an essential part of its heritage.
